While most of Daughter of Camelot comes from my imagination, I used a combination of the legends of King Arthur and what little history of the Dark Ages is available. I find this period of history particularly fascinating to read and write about because it has to be pieced together from unreliable texts, archeological evidence and the imagination.
I've pulled together some of my favorite websites to explore around Arthur and the timeframe in which Deirdre and her friends came to life.
Early British Kingdoms http://www.earlybritishkingdoms.com/
This is a terrific site to begin exploring Dark Age Britain. There is more than enough information here to keep even a well versed Arthurian busy.
Vortigern Studies http://www.vortigernstudies.org.uk
Vortigern is the guy who started it all. It seems probable that he was an actual 5th century warlord and it was by his invitation that the waves of Anglo-Saxon invasions followed. The Vortigern Studies website has a wealth of information on the historicity and fantasy of the Arthurian era.
Current Archeology http://www.archaeology.co.uk/
Short of observing artifacts first hand, seeing beautiful photos and reading expert description can help to set some details in place. Current Archeology presents new finds with wonderful images and explanation.
